Australian abattoir admits calves ill-treated after Animal Liberation releases video

ABC News: ‘Animal Liberation Tasmania forwarded anonymous footage from Tasmanian Quality Meats abattoir to the Primary Industries Department in December. The group’s campaign director Mehr Gupta said it showed workers beating male calves until they collapsed and throwing them to the ground by the ears. Abattoir managing director owner Brian Oliver said he was devastated at the mistreatment but the company was working to ensure it did not happen again… The RSPCA described the case as “abhorrent, cruel and distressing”. “The treatment of these calves by abattoir workers — which included calves being beaten until they collapsed, hit with poly pipes, thrown to the ground by the ears, tail or head alone, and pulled backward by their tails — demonstrates a complete disregard for the welfare of the animals and their capacity to suffer”…

The RSPCA also said the footage “proves that all states governments need to take a more active role in visiting, monitoring and auditing abattoirs, to prevent animal cruelty taking place and becoming entrenched”. Greens MP Andrea Dawkins aired the allegations in Parliament during Question Time… She said the vision highlighted “deep issues” within the industry. “The Government has to mount a thorough investigation into this action and make sure in future there’s enough money in animal inspectorate services for these cases to be investigated,” Ms Dawkins said’.
