Sobering Photographs Show The Gloomy Existence Of Polar Bears In Captivity

Justina Bakutyte: ‘When you’re a kid, going to the zoo equals to a Jungle Book-like adventure… When you’re an adult, however, going to the zoo is a very different – traumatizing – experience. Because at that point you probably already know that animals held in captivity are often treated very poorly, some zoo officials even called it “degrading.” On multiple occasions, we have read about captive animals exhibiting signs of depression, attempts of suicide, but that didn’t have a big impact on the thousands of zoos worldwide. Taiwanese photographer Sheng Wen Lo hopes to put the issue of animal captivity in the spotlight once more with his ‘shocking’ series, White Bear…

Featuring photographs from 26 zoos in Europe and China, the series is a no-bullshit look at the terrible conditions these magnificent creatures have to live in, sometimes their whole entire lives… Small spaces filled with blocks of concrete with flaked off paint, rocks and muddy swimming pools don’t really convey the sense of an appropriate surrounding for an animal such as a polar bear. “Combined with artificial habitats and props, the bears look very awkward.
